FaST LINES
2009/2010
Lion Jay Huyssoon, President

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

February 24, 2010

Pres. Jay opened the meeting at 7:15 am.    Lion Mary – song,   Lion Phyllis– pledge,  Lion Bob – Dollar & Prayer.

Anniversaries:  Lion Bill and Annette celebrated their anniversary this past week.  It has been an exciting couple of weeks for Lion Bill.  New Granddaughter and anniversary.  He put $$ in the pot to show us how happy he is!!!

Guests: Sonny Antonio joined us again this morning.  A special Board Meeting was held immediately following the meeting where we voted to accept his application for membership.  A date will be set for his installation.  Welcome!  Also joining us this morning was Debra Cohen, the Girl Scout Community Development Coordinator. (and she brought cookies!!)

Lion Bob presented her with our donation of $500 for the Girl Scout Parents’ help with our Crab Feed.  We couldn’t do it without them.

The next Senior Dinner will be Thursday, February 25 at 5:30pm at the Suisun Senior Center.  Please come and help out if you are available.

Lions Billy and Mary attended the District meeting this past week-end.  Many items were presented and I am sure we will be hearing more about them in the coming weeks.  The District is looking at securing insurance for all clubs that would cover general liability as well as liquor liability.  This is good news.  It would be an annual fee based on the number of members in each club, and would be approx. $7.00 per member.   This will be voted on at the District Convention.  Also covered was the topic of networking.  It seems members should not be fined for mentioning their business, as the first Lions clubs were started in order to promote their businesses via networking.  Something for our Tail Twister to think about.

Lion Bob did attend the dinner on Friday night where he purchased raffle tickets.  Seems he won a wonderful prize that he needed to claim.  Lion Bill bid $10.00 for it and swept it away from him.  You snooze, you lose.

We received a thank you from Archway Recovery Center for the $500 donation we gave them.  We also received a thank you from the FF Scarlet Brigade Boosters for the $100 donation they received from us.

Our next Board Meeting will be held on March 8 at the Cordelia Fire Hall.  7:00 pm.

There will be a City of Hope Lions Tribute Day on March 28 at the Platt Conference Center in Duarte, CA.  Lion John has more information if you are interested in attending.
Speaker:  Our speaker this morning was Vickie Good, Principle of the Fairfield-Suisun Adult School.  The Adult school serves approx 5000 students every year, with 1500 of them taking English as a second language.  It is open to all ages and has classes both during the day and evenings. Classes range from Basic Education, to Computer Classes.  They even have a class for “Older Adults” to improve their health and fitness.  Something to keep in mind.  You can pick up a complete schedule of classes at any library, at city hall, and at the Adult School.  They have just moved into their new location at 900 Travis Blvd. and are looking for volunteers as well as someone to serve on the Service Advisory Board.  For more information on what they offer, please check out their website:  www.fsadultschool.com.  .
Fine Free:  Pres. Jay    $9.00:  Pres. Jay  Card Drawing– Lion Jim C.  (Pres Jay forgot the cards, so Lion Jim will draw next week.)  Card Drawing:  $223.  Convention Fund  $361.

District Convention:  April 29-May 2 in Redding.

Welcome back Lion John and glad you are feeling better.  He thanked us for the card and phone calls he received while he was under the weather.  Seems some of the club forgot to include “Lion” in front of their names when they signed the card…that cost them.

We received a thank you from Archway Recovery Center for the donation we sent for eyeglasses.

Our next Board Meeting will be held on March 8 at the Cordelia Fire Hall.  7:00 pm.
Speaker:  Our speaker this morning was Kathie Thoming, Pre-natal educator at North Bay Healthcare.  Kathie has started the ABC (A Baby is Coming) program 14 years ago at North Bay.  Participants are low-income and often have many hardships that get in the way of them taking prenatal classes.  They range in age from teens to women in their 30’s.    Expectant mothers and fathers learn how to take care of themselves during pregnancy to insure a healthy baby.  They also have classes on Newborn care, Maternity Unit Tour, Safety, and car seat connection.   Kathie has also initiated an education incentive for 2010.  For each class the parents attend, they receive a special gift such as a blanket or diaper bag.  Dex Baby Products in Vacaville has assisted her in securing “Heartbeat Bears” for parents that complete the program.    Kathie is always looking for donations for the purchase of the gifts and bears.  You may have thought this an unusual topic for our club, but many found it very interesting and asked several questions.

Guest:  Ashley Doolittle was back visiting us again today.  Our next Student Lion?  Welcome Ashley.

Our discussion this morning was our upcoming Crab Feed.  Please meet at the Cordelia Fire Hall at 6:00pm on Friday if you can help with the cooking.  As the Fire Hall has an event scheduled in the main room, we will be using the kitchen upstairs for chopping the vegetables and tearing the tickets.  The cooking will take place downstairs in the BBQ area.  Don’t forget your aprons.

Please plan on being at the Community Center on Saturday at 4:00 to help with set up.  We will need everyone’s help to make this event a success.  Bring your aprons.

Lions Joe and Mary will do the shopping Friday afternoon.  Lion Gary will drop off the pots on Thursday.  Lion Jay will pick up the wine, and Lions Joe and John will pick up the beer.

Lion Brian has picked up the Cocktail Sauce and will pick up the cakes on Saturday.   The bread will be delivered to the Fire Hall Saturday morning and the crab will be delivered to the Community Center at 4:00pm.  Lion Dan will see that the burners and raffle drums are where they need to be.  Lion Billy will take the cooked spaghetti, sauce, pots, and dishes to the Community Center Saturday.  Lions Gary and John will see that all the bar supplies are delivered.

Does anyone have a large coffee pot we could use?   Please let me know if you have one available.

Money and stubs for 297 tickets have been turned in so far.  The Scouts have another 40 tickets that they will sell.  Along with the walk ins, we are pretty much SOLD OUT.  If you still have ticket stubs and money, please turn them in to Lion Billy as soon as possible so he can finalize the seating.

So far we have a total of 20 Silent Auction items.  Where we put the tables will depend on the total number of tickets sold.  Thank you Lion Jim for chairing this and to Patty Huyssoon and Valerie Prigmore for doing all the work.  Patty has typed up the bid sheets and will deliver the items on Saturday.

Valerie Prigmore has once again put together the program for us.  Thank you Valerie.

I will need some help to transport all the raffle items from my home to the hall on Saturday.  Please let me know if you are available to help.  We will want to have them loaded and to the hall by 3:45.

Maureen Brook has painted us a special item for our Silent Auction.  It is truly unbelievable.  Thank you Maureen.

WORK PROJECT:   We have received a thank you from Wreaths Across America for our help in picking up the wreaths. Thank you Lion Brian for chairing this.

Our next Board Meeting will be held on February 8 at the Cordelia Fire Hall.  7:00 pm.  One of the topics we will be discussing is the possibility of purchasing a covered van to store our supplies.  Lion Bob will report on the estimated costs.  With a van we could keep all of our supplies in one place instead of having them scattered in several member’s garages.

This month’s Board Meeting was held on January 11  at the Cordelia Fire Hall.  Topics discussed included:  Golf Tournament, Crab Feed, Archway Recovery, Spaghetti Feed, and City of Hope.  It was also discussed that members should be more diligent in lining up speakers for our meetings.

Message from PDG Barry Fredenburg:  “This is to let you know that Governor Marty with the help of International is going to canvas the city of Vacaville January 18-20 (Mon-Weds).  We need at least 10 Lions to do a good job.  We ask that you notify your clubs of this event and ask for volunteers, the more the merrier.  As Marty and I have done this before, we know it is a great learning tool which you can bring back to your club for future membership drives.  Vacaville has had four thriving Lions Clubs in the recent past and being a city of close to 100,000, 14 Lions in the remaining club doesn't get it for serving the entire community.  Please help our community out.

Lion Brian and John will co-chair our golf tournament to be held in the Spring.  They will get together and pick a date  and will bring it to our next Board Meeting.

Guest Speaker
